The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth and is now looking for a full-time Second Secretary Migration (Brussels, UK Mission to the EU) for a Maternity Cover.
This is a temporary role, offered on the basis of maternity cover. The holder of this position will play a key role in contributing to the UK’s migration and mobility objectives, with a key focus on developments in the area of asylum and illegal migration. The team also covers a number of other high priority areas, including borders, visas and legal migration, organised immigration crime and citizens’ rights.
Roles and responsibilities
The role holder will be expected to monitor and feed back developments in the EU space on migration and asylum policy, notably on elements under the EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum. The role holder will be responsible for producing briefing and advice and will need to engage with both internal and external stakeholders, while remaining astute and spotting opportunities for advancing UK objectives on migration and mobility.
The role holder will need to quickly build expertise and develop strong relationships with UK Government colleagues. It is expected that the role holder will also lead for the team on upstream migration objectives and on tackling modern slavery and trafficking in human beings. These are areas which offer possibilities for enhancing public diplomacy activity.
This role will provide the opportunity to work on fast moving and high profile issues, with a great deal of political interest, and gain exposure to senior level UK Government colleagues in UKMis and London. The ideal candidate would be someone who is able to deliver at pace and is able to deliver effectively by prioritising workload and juggling competing demands in the busy periods. The post holder will need to be flexible about the exact nature of the work as the UK re-establishes its relationship with the EU, and so will need to be able to adapt to changing priorities and developments.

This is a full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. This position will be filled on a “replacement contract” to cover a Maternity Leave. It is anticipated that the staff member will return in September 2021. This is only an indication and any possible earlier return or extension to this date would be discussed with the successful candidate.
The monthly gross salary for this position is € 5,471.76, C4 level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13 month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law. The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
Please be advised that the British Diplomatic Missions will not be able to meet the travel costs incurred when travelling to the interview, nor the costs connected with relocation if offered a job.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
