The British Embassy in Bucharest is looking for a highly motivated Senior Economic Officer to lead on analysis and reporting on the Romanian economy.
The Senior Economic Officer will be expected to draw on a wide range of contacts in addition to their own expertise to provide reliable and trustworthy information and insight for the British Embassy and UK Government in order to contribute to UK policy in Romania.
This is a key role in the Economic Diplomacy team in the Embassy. The ideal candidate would be a highly motivated self-starter with experience of employment in government, business or politics and with a keen interest in how economic issues affects current affairs and international relations.
The jobholder will report to the Head of the Economic Diplomacy team and will work closely with colleagues across the Embassy, and UK Government departments in London to deliver UK objectives.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Lead on all aspects of the economic reporting. Produce high quality and timely economic analysis and reports for key stakeholders in the Embassy and teams in London;
- Identify and develop relationships with a network of contacts to support analytical understanding of economic issues and developments across Romania;
- Lead on producing quarterly economic reviews and contribute economic input for briefings. Provide economic analysis for the Embassy’s Political Section and work with them on their activities;
- Develop the Embassy’s understanding and presence across all sectors in Romania, with specific focus on energy and financial services. Identify project activity, which supports delivery of key economic priorities, design, implement and monitor any subsequent project;
- Work closely with the Department of International Trade team in the Embassy to identify opportunities for British firms, and take forward actions relating to policy challenges companies face that restrict or limit in some way British commercial activity in Romania;
- Manage one B3 officer and provide guidance for the team intern;
- The jobholder will be expected to engage with relevant stakeholders and prepare oral and written reports for both the Embassy and London based audiences with readers from across UK Government. They will also be expected to support the wider Policy Team and Embassy performance, corporate activity and to contribute to Team resilience.
- Fluency in English and Romanian oral and written (minimum level required C1/C2 under the CEFRL and equivalent *). Level of Languages will be assessed during the interview;
- A bachelor’s degree in Economics (minimum);
- Demonstrated interest in economic matters across Romania;
- Strong networking skills and ability to build relationships with key contacts including at senior levels;
- Strong oral/written communication skills with a good understanding of the challenges and sensitivities of working in government/ politics;
- Positive and flexible attitude.
- Experience of communicating economic analysis and concepts to non-technical audiences.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for 24 months (35 hours net per week) with possibility of renewal. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.
The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.
Monthly salary is 10,161 RON gross. Whilst the Emergency Ordinance 79/2017 is in place the job holder will receive a gross monthly compensation bonus of 2,032 RON . In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata and may receive a performance related bonus at year end. Staff also receive meal vouchers and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania. The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 45 working days.
All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Romania. The British Embassy does not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Romanian employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Romania and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
