The Department for International Trade has an exciting opportunity for a confident, motivated and experienced Head of Communication and Marketing. You will have a strong external communications background and be responsible for coordinating activity across 13 markets, supported by embedded resource across Asia Pacific.

The role requires you to engage and influence an international business and government audience with strategic trade and investment messaging through a combination of media, digital communication and strategic campaigns. This role is with British High commission based out of Singapore.

You will lead the promotion of the UK as a first-class destination for inward investment and as an export superpower across a range of sectors, and work with sector colleagues to develop a pipeline of business opportunities across the region.

You will play a crucial role in supporting Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific and DIT’s COO APAC.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for promoting British trade across the world. This is an exciting time to join DIT and a pivotal role in Asia Pacific. You will have the opportunity to shape the UK’s international trade agenda and foster UK growth.

Main objectives for this role

  • Provide advice on strategic communications priorities for issues under HMTC’s remit by developing, implementing, and evaluating an annual communications plan for the HMTC and the priorities set out in the Regional Trade Plan
  • Advise HMTC and senior leadership in the network on strategies to reach target influencers in key APAC markets including providing guidance on deploying HMTC as a spokesperson for the trade and investment agenda across the region, working closely with FCDO communications colleagues
  • Develop DIT Asia Pacific’s Regional Communications and Marketing plan to support the delivery of the wider HMG Asia Pacific Regional Trade Plan 
  • Set strategic direction for a remote marketing team embedded across 13 Asia Pacific markets and the DIT marketing hub in Hong Kong
  • Embed “digital communications by default” approach, especially as we continue to respond to COVID-19; encourage risk-taking and a culture of innovation with digital platforms focused on growing both reach and engagement 
  • Develop network of influential Asia Pacific and international media contacts that can be leveraged to promote DIT messages 
  • Strengthen and develop the DIT relationships with key multipliers, organisations, agencies and Asia Pacific companies to help achieve DIT business objectives, simultaneously contributing to raising our profile;  
  • Work with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Press and Public Affairs networks across APAC markets to deliver communications strategies that promote the UK’s reputation
  • Represent Asia Pacific in the global DIT Global Marketing and Communications network 
  • Demonstrate leadership through effective Internal Comms and establish a collaborative culture across Asia Pacific 
  • Monitor outputs and outcomes to maximise resource efficiency; apply flexible leadership styles to deliver through others and support staff development

  • At least 5 years public or private sector experience in media, PR or the communications industry
  • Strong understanding of the business and investment climate in the UK and Asia Pacific
  • Experience and understanding of current digital media tools and channels
  • Prior experience of leading and managing teams
  • A willingness to work out of hours, on an occasional basis 
  • Strong media contacts and/or ability to leverage influencers for achieving communication objectives
  • Engaging and resilient leader, able to empower colleagues and build capability 
  • Budget management skills and experience.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary of SGD 8,103 per month and annual wage supplement [an additional 2 months’ salary paid out in December each year], 23-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata and insurance plan.

Due to the Government of Singapore’s measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, including safe distancing and travel restrictions, we are only able to accept applications from those currently resident in Singapore.  The successful applicant will likely be required to work from home until safe distancing measures are relaxed.

Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.30am to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday.
