The UK Mission to the UN & WTO in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at many international organisations in Geneva and is recruiting a highly motivated Trade and Economic Intern.
The internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the Trade and Economic team’s work to promote British and global prosperity through the rules-based international trading system.
The internship will offer insight into the economic diplomacy work of the UK Mission, work with counterparts in the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and the Department for International Trade in London, and the opportunity to learn about multilateral trade, aid for trade, the WTO and the UN.
The work can be both demanding and rewarding. We often work under time pressure in a fast-paced environment. This internship will provide support to the Trade and Economic Team before and during the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (MC12), due to take place in Geneva in December 2021.
This internship offers hands on experience with on the job training and performance evaluation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supporting delivery of UK objectives at MC12;
- Attending and reporting on meetings, including at the World Trade Organisation;
- Coordinating visit programmes for e.g. senior visitors to Geneva;
- Conducting background research for the Trade and Economic Team as needed;
- If necessary providing support on other economic agencies, including the International Telecommunications Union, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the UN Economic Commission for Europe;
- Providing administrative support to the team and wider Mission.
- Fluent written and spoken English (C1* level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible individual with excellent skills in communication and organisation, and with strong interest in economic governance, international trade and global affairs.
- Degree in economics, international relations, law or closely related fields, or practical experience in any of these fields.
- Willingness to undergo a mandatory security check.
- Masters degree or previous experience in related fields.

All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 18 months for any EU / Schengen country.
EU and EFTA nationals do not require visa sponsorship along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore, United Kingdom, Vatican.
The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,450 CHF. Please note that the intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, mandatory health insurance, as well as any other costs. This internship will be for a period of 10 weeks.
The cost of a monthly travel card within Geneva will be reimbursed as will the cost of travel insurance up to the value of £250 for the duration of internship.
The final appointment will be dependent upon successful security clearance. Please note that selected candidates may have to visit the Mission (around 4-6 weeks before starting) for a security interview, which is also at their own cost.
