The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Trade and Investment Promotion and Negotiation organisation for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world; we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.

DIT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The Latin American and the Caribbean Region (LATAC) is led from Sao Paulo. The network is represented in 19 posts with a team of over 140.

The UK’s Department for International Trade in Ecuador is recruiting a creative and innovative person for the position of Trade and Investment Officer at the British Embassy in Quito to contribute to our ambition of supporting British businesses to increase their exports to Ecuador.

The full-time position will report directly to the Head of Trade & Investment in Ecuador. It will start in February 2021, subject to the successful receipt of the required security clearance.

The position will:

  • Support the team by carrying out research, scoping current commercial activities in Ecuador, to identify opportunities and develop a pipeline of business opportunities in key sectors for UK trade with Ecuador
  • Provide advice to UK companies in their export journey to Ecuador with market intelligence, regulatory information and business advice.
  • Provide first-level support to the team in engaging with government authorities and key stakeholders in the private sector to ensure successful commercial outcomes for British business across a number of key sectors including healthcare, food and drink, financial services and agri-tech and mining.
  • Work with UK companies to overcome barriers to trade by working with government and regulators, as well as colleagues focused on trade policy and market access. 
  • Assist in assuring that opportunities are aligned with four pillars of our LATAC Regional Trade Plan covering: Opening Markets (market access and trade deals); Trade Support; Foreign direct Investment (FDI); and Promotion (Marketing and Communications).  
  • Support work to align DIT commercial work with other HMG work at the Embassy and in the region ; Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes; and explore Multilateral Development Banks’ Initiatives (e.g. IDB, World Bank etc.); to ensure DIT are maximising secondary benefits for UK firms.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining strong working relationship with DIT HQ and other HMG colleagues, leveraging appropriate expertise and support to help UK companies, and deliver where needed.
  • Work as a flexible member of the Embassy to support wider Embassy work as needed, including but not limited to, assisting with providing first-level support for Crisis Work and other cross-government work and activities.
  • Be an active member of the regional DIT LATAC team: taking part in various regional events, webinars and all relevant staff meetings

  • At least 3 years’ work experience in a commercially focused role.
  • Undergraduate degree and/or other relevant professional qualification.
  • Proven ability to work with businesses to secure commercial results.
  • Experience of working in or with government departments, NGOs, and similar institutions
  • Proven track record of cross-team collaboration
  • A positive, resilient, flexible and adaptable “can-do” attitude that can see way through challenges.

Language requirements:

Language: Fluent English / Fluent Spanish

  • Trade and Investment experience, e.g. assisting with organising trade missions and lobbying official authorities
