The British Consulate General in Istanbul is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Trade Manager focus on the Digital Technology sector to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team.

We are responsible for: bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed; delivering a new trade policy framework for the UK as we have left the EU; promoting British trade and investment across the world; and building the global appetite for British goods and services.

How can you contribute?

In this exciting position, the jobholder will lead on the delivery of the UK Government’s trade support for the Digital Technology sector in Turkey, which aims to deepen UK-Turkey cooperation in digital transformation, help UK businesses to export their products, build new partnerships, and overcome market access barriers. You will work closely with colleagues across UK Government and the UK technology ecosystem to maximise the impact of your trade support. The other key aspect of the role will be to lead on analysis of Turkey’s fast-moving digital technology sector. Building a deep understanding of the key technology developments and emerging trends in Turkey, and assess where trading/partnership opportunities are springing up for UK businesses.

You should be passionate about business development, have a clear understanding of the Turkish technology sector and be up-to-date with commercial developments that will allow you and the team to be in the best position to support UK business. The work will be varied and demanding and you will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter and able to juggle priorities to demanding timelines.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for supporting UK exports into the Turkish digital technology sector;
  • Analyse trends across the Turkish digital transformation landscape and assess where commercial opportunities are springing up for UK businesses;
  • Lead export support for UK digital/cloud transformation products;
  • Developing and maintaining a high level Turkish network of senior contacts within key industry organisations and networks ( e.g.: Municipalities with UK sustainable urban planning solutions; Tourism agencies with UK immersive tech; Property developers with UK automated building solutions ; Financial institutions with UK fintech products; etc.)
  • Contribute to UK Government’s export ambitions for Turkey by delivering £5M worth of Export Wins in 2021/22, and record/ report on your interactions on DataHub.
  • Manage an up-to-date and accurate pipeline of opportunities for UK tech exporters;
  • Line management of one Trade Officer; ensuring they have clear objectives, regular reviews, support, and development opportunities;
  • Support the organisation and delivery of key events, Ministerial visits and UKEF/Prosperity/FCDO events as required, including the UK Technology Conference and potential EECAN delegations to major technology trade shows (i.e. London Tech Week). Speak about your work at public events as required;
  • Build links with other teams and promote inclusion and wellbeing in our working environment.

  • Undergraduate degree, or equivalent practical experience relevant to the role;
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in export/trade, or the technology industry;
  • Fluency in Turkish and English (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);
  • Good understanding of emerging (Ai,IoT,5G, blockchain, AR/VR) technologies and how they are being applied to different sectors;
  • A strong network in the technology sector in Turkey or internationally;
  • Experience of business development in the the technology sector;
  • Proven ability to deliver commercial outcomes at pace;
  • Strong desire and vision to convene key players and drive real world change.

  • Awareness of the strengths of the UK technology ecosystem;
  • Experience in digital transformation and implementing cloud operating models for organisations;
  • Experience of business development in the Turkish telecommunications sector.

This is a permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is 3,251.74 USD gross, paid in 12 instalments, C4 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.
