The British Embassy in Oslo is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Norway. The British Embassy is hiring a Trade Policy Adviser for The Department of International Trade (DIT).
Working in the Trade and Investment Department and alongside the European Affairs and Trade Policy team, the main purpose of this job is to ensure businesses gain access to the market and support DIT and FCDO deliver on strategic market access and trade policy issues. This includes the communication of the outcome of trade negations and changes in the UK-Norway trade relationship; collating evidence of market barriers and developing a strategic overview of barriers to UK businesses; liaising with local Embassy colleagues, partners in the UK Government plus other stakeholders to develop appropriate policy responses.
The position is a key role in the Trade and Investment Department, but also supports the wider Embassy efforts and activities, working closely across teams. The right candidate is a self-starter, works independently and seeks opportunities to engage with the wider business community in Norway.
In more detail, main responsibilities will include:

Communicate with private sector stakeholders about the new trading system agreed under the UK-EEA/EFTA Free Trade Agreement;

Support businesses by responding to questions on the changes in the UK-Norway trading relationship following the end of the Brexit Transition Period, and how to address these;

Help collate and analyse market barriers and trade policy issues encountered by colleagues and feed into local, regional and central (Whitehall) strategies to address wider regulatory and trade policy issues (e.g. at bilateral or EEA level);

Support in prioritising, developing and project-managing plans to address local market barriers, supporting the DIT Director, DIT Team and colleagues across the Embassy in delivering these, including those barriers affecting local trade campaigns;

Communicate central priorities and campaigns on trade policy and market access issues to colleagues;

Focus on addressing market barriers within key sectors, engaging on specific trade policy issues important to the host country and leveraging influence and partnering depending on the influence and position of the host country.

Work closely with DIT and FCDO colleagues, as well as ensuring a wider cooperation between different missions and markets across the region, to ensure a one Government approach;

Assist key Ministerial (and other) senior visits from the UK;

Support the development of trade policy expertise across the DIT and FCDO networks.

Fluency in English and Norwegian (both verbally and written, C1 level*);

Availability to travel as the position will require occasional travel;

Stakeholder management skills;

Strong written and oral communication skills;

Demonstrable analytical skills, the ability to make sense of complex information;

Resilience and the ability to work under pressure on a challenging portfolio independently.
Some relevant policy experience, relevant experience of trade policy and market access issues or some previous experience, or interest in, working on European affairs.

This is a permanent full-time position, five working days (currently 35 hours net) per week.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
