Main purpose of job:

The British Office Taipei is recruiting a Science and Innovation Officer to support the work of the Science and Innovation team.  Your key role will be helping to coordinate UK-Taiwan Innovate UK funded programs. You will be working on projects focused on innovative future technologies in a range of exciting areas including Advanced Manufacturing, Off-Shore Wind and Smart Cities and other potential areas such as Digital Healthcare and Semiconductors. A key function of your role is collaboration with Innovate UK colleagues based in the UK and helping them liaise with Taiwan based delivery partners to ensure smooth and timely running of various Innovate UK funded programmes.

You will also be responsible for providing a range of administrative support to the Science and Innovation team as well as the wider Economic and Prosperity Section.  In particular you will support Science and Innovation Network work focused on programmes, events and research to deepen UK-Taiwan science and innovation collaboration.  There will also be opportunities to get involved in the wider work of the Prosperity Team, including supporting research and analysis work on a variety of issues, including climate change and economic policy.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Innovate UK funded programme management

  • Facilitate communications between Innovate UK and delivery partners for Innovate UK funded programmes providing support where appropriate to help keep these programmes on track such as arranging meetings, keeping action lists and following these up. The programmes will include already planned Global Business Innovation Programmes covering Smart Cities and Offshore Wind. Another significant collaboration programme is expected to be announced in the coming weeks focused on Industry 4.0.
  • Be first point of contact for questions related to UK-Taiwan Innovate UK funded programmes from UK or Taiwan businesses.
  • Work with local Science and Innovation Network partners and Innovate UK to lay groundwork for future UK-Taiwan collaboration programmes.

Support to Senior Science and Innovation Officer and wider team support

  • Research work on science and tech related issues as they become relevant to the UK’s relationship with Taiwan guided by the Senior Science and Innovation Office or other team members as appropriate.
  • Support on Science and Tech related programme work, including on digital healthcare and semiconductors, subject to project funding.
  • Support to the wider Prosperity Team, including helping to implement projects on a range of areas potentially including climate change and financial services.

Wider team support including arranging meetings, booking rooms and transport, supporting event planning, taking notes of meetings, drafting short letters, and other administrative tasks as needed.

The role being advertised is a fixed-term contract of 4 months (subject to actual start date) (to 31 March 2022 only) in Taipei.

We are looking for a candidate who can preferably start ASAP.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Office are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Taiwan employment law. Candidates must have the correct permit to work in Taiwan in order to apply.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Working patterns:

The role will primarily involve engaging with stakeholders located in Taiwan and in the UK. Often this communication can be done remotely so occasional WFH will be an option.
