LAC Regional Media Coordinator


The Opportunity

 

This can be a remote position based in Panama, Peru, Colombia, Nicaragua, Honduras or El Salvador.

 

Save the Children is hiring a Regional Media Coordinator to ensure Save the Children is a credible and powerful voice for the most vulnerable and marginalized children. This position will lead Save the Children’s media work on high profile issues and crises across Latin America and the Caribbean, harnessing the power of national and international media to help us achieve our advocacy, campaign, brand, programmatic and fundraising goals.

 

The role holder will:

  • lead the regional media strategy and work closely with the Country Offices who are carrying out their own national media outreach, including supporting content generation, providing training and mentoring, editing media materials, and supporting the development of national media strategies.

 

  • work closely with advocacy, communications, campaigns colleagues within the region to ensure media outreach is strategic, impactful, and targeted. The coordinator will coordinate with the Global Media Unit (GMU) to develop and maintain strong relationships with influential media, find and generate story ideas and media materials

 

  • work in accordance with the news agenda, including reacting to breaking news, particularly in regard to child rights violations and humanitarian responses. They will be required to support on crisis communications and reputational issues when they arise, providing critical strategic media advice.

 

To be successful you will have:

 

  • University degree in a relevant subject or advanced student; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 4 years of experience in media and communications work in a similar role, including experience in humanitarian/emergency settings.
  • Fluency in both, speaking and writing, in Spanish and English is essential
  • Significant experience as a news journalist or a press officer in a regional and/or international setting, with a track record of very good coverage.
  • Excellent writing skills for press releases, media briefings, opinion pieces and the crafting of key messages for media purposes.
  • Analytical/communications skills – with ability to be both engaging and nuanced; ability to make a complex story sound simple.
  • Experience of communications processes, research and development of internal/external high-quality communications products; ability to appropriately adjust communication/writing style depending on the target audience.
  • Experience with social media/digital strategies and/or developing content for social media
  • Full computer literacy in standard Microsoft Office products
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of human and child rights.
  • Experience of work in non-profit sector a plus
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside normal business hours during emergencies
