Communications Specialist – Global Restoration Initiative

Job Summary

In this role, you will enhance Restoration communications to audiences worldwide. You will support the Restoration Communications Lead in content writing and editing, website maintenance, partnership building, and social media across the initiative. You will focus on supporting AFR100, a pan-African country-led restoration effort, and the Land Accelerator, a program that trains and mentors entrepreneurs whose businesses restore land, in Africa and South Asia.

This role offers an opportunity to have an international impact within a growing and effective communications team. You will work with the Restoration Communications Lead, associates for AFR100, the Land Accelerator, and WRI India, and others within the global Restoration team.

This position is remote due to Covid-19, this position can be based out of any of the WRI offices worldwide once restrictions have lifted.

Job Responsibilities

• Support Communications Lead in daily tasks as assigned
• Contribute to the development of and support execution of Restoration communications strategy in Africa and South Asia
• Write, edit and/or produce a variety of outreach materials (e.g., blogs, videos, op-eds, presentations, infographics, media materials, etc.) as needed by the team
• Develop and upload content for web platforms which have international, African, and South Asian audiences (AFR100.org, wri.org/restoration, thelandaccelerator.com, TerraMatch.org), including creating new web pages as needed
• Create video and graphic content for Restoration social media accounts and web presences globally
• Ensure content is up-to-date, of high quality, and consistent in tone and message
• Work in collaboration with internal and external colleagues
• Facilitate translation of English content into French and produce original content in French for African audiences
• Carry out data analysis to report the way in which people access Restoration websites
• Create content and manage the process for related newsletters
• Coordinate logistics for public webinars related to AFR100 and the Land Accelerator in Africa and South Asia
• Contribute to communications activities ahead of annual international partner meetings and other major outreach events

Job Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Minimum of 1 year of full-time, relevant professional experience working in public relations, journalism, or communications with salient link to climate, energy or broader environmental issues
• Fluency in French is strongly preferred
• Proven ability to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of communications products, influence strategies, and audience targeting
• Experience with video editing and visual design strongly preferred
• Strong communication skills and ability to produce materials focused on diverse external audiences
• Experience working with reporters or members of the media preferred
• Experience working in a large US or global organization preferred
• Work authorization is required for the country in which you will be based. WRI is unable to sponsor visas for this opportunity

• Articulate, versatile, highly-skilled writer with professional writing experience (professional writing samples required); strong oral communications skills required
• Proven ability to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of communications products, influence strategies, and audience targeting
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a global team
• Excellent inter-personal communication skills, including the ability to encourage collaboration with other programs, international offices, and partners
• Highly motivated, proactive work style and excellent organizational skills
• Ability to think creatively and collaboratively about all elements of communications work
• Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities and able to manage multiple deadlines and deliver high quality work products

Potential Salary: $46,000 – $60,000 if based in US. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors

The Global Restoration Initiative (Restoration) is part of the Forests Program at WRI and works to inspire, enable and mobilize action to restore economic and ecological vitality to degraded farms, forests, grasslands, mangroves, and peatland around the globe.
