Data Protection Officer

The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the permanent Data Protection Officer in our London office. Save The Children International (SCI) are looking to recruit an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to meet its obligations under the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018) and other relevant Data Protection legislation within our areas of operation.

Reporting to the Head of Information Security and Data Protection and the Chief Risk Officer (as the board contact for Data Protection) the DPO is responsible for overseeing SCI’s data compliance programme, data privacy, and in particular ensuring that we meet its obligations under GDPR.

The DPO will act as SCI’s primary contact for supervisory authorities, including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and data subjects and offer independent objective advice for the SCI’s senior leadership team. They may also be requested to offer advice and guidance to Save The Children Association (SCA) and its Members.

Ultimately, the DPO will help drive compliance with SCI’s data protection framework (including GDPR and DPA 2018 compliance) through transparent data protection policies, systems and procedures that embed data protection into SCI’s global operations, by helping develop and data protection training and by monitoring internal compliance. Some international travel is expected in the execution of this role (up to c.5% p.a.) In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder is expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

• Expert knowledge of data protection legislation, in particular the GDPR, and a good understanding of other major privacy frameworks and evolving legislation worldwide (essential)
• In depth knowledge and experience of information technology and data management systems (essential)
• Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with people at all levels within SCI (essential)
• Experience in managing data incidents and breaches (essential)
• Knowledge of cybersecurity risks and information security standards (desirable)
• Experience in a similar role and understanding of the data protection risks faced by a large data-driven organisation with the ability to conduct the role independently and with integrity (essential)
• Ability to make good judgements regarding data privacy risks and to prioritise resources and activity around managing those risks (essential)
• Experience in developing policy and compliance training (essential)
• Experience of working within a large global organisation (desirable)
• Ability to work unsupervised, exercise leadership, and influence change (essential)
• Excellent writing and presentation skills (essential)
• Strong change and project management skills including the ability to manage time well, prioritise effectively, and handle multiple deadlines (essential)
• Ability to use independent judgement and discretion when making majority of decisions (essential)
• Detail-orientated approach needed to recommend and implement strategic improvements on a range of data privacy and data protection issues (essential)
• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion (essential)
• Knowledge of PC applications, including MS Office (essential)
