Graphic Design Specialist: Government Relations and Communications

Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for developing and implementing NDI’s graphic design, including the creation of the full range of design products, under the direction of the Digital Communications Manager. The Graphic Design Specialist will have knowledge of current design software, web design and be skilled with every step of the design process from concept to final deliverables. This position is based in Washington, DC.

Essential Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Work on a wide range of projects and media, using various computer software to visualize and develop innovative graphic designs.
  • Ensure designs meet organizational standards, accessibility standards, brand expectations, and express ideas accurately.
  • Work with teams across the organization to translate programmatic goals into a wide range of materials, including (but not limited to) web pages, presentations, programming reports, event invitations, newsletters, and marketing materials.
  • Develop concepts by hand or with software, and execute original content determining ideal usage of color, text, font style, imagery, and layout.
  • Manage the design and uploading process of all project material, understanding best practices for using a content management system.
  • In collaboration with the Government Relations and Communications team, ensure a common look and feel to all NDI products, including publications, web content, and print products. This includes contributing to the development of a brand style guide and working across the Institute to ensure a broad understanding of branding guidelines.

  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Incumbent operates under general direction, plans or coordinates work in accordance with established objectives.
  • Incumbent regularly interacts with staff at all levels within NDI.
  • Incumbent regularly interacts with NDI partners, funders and other key program contacts.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, or similar discipline

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of experience in professional graphic design, preferably with a creative or marketing agency
  • Portfolio of successful graphic design content, branding, and design campaigns required
  • Experience (academic and professional) with design software, including Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of branding and marketing, with the ability to vary style and layouts depending on the project
  • Exceptional creativity and innovative design skills; ability to translate conceptual ideas into compelling visual representations, in print and electronic media, and across diverse digital platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Drupal, HTML5, and JavaScript
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and through various communications media.
  • Excellent knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media platforms’ content design specifications and requirements.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, particularly with audience and stakeholder’s data, and the ability to draw conclusions, determine options, and recommend next steps.
  • Nuanced understanding of audience, and experience working on complex, politically sensitive issues in dynamic environments.
  • Basic proficiency in Google Suite tools preferred as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent multitasking skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail and creating accurate work products with a focus on quality is a must
  • Knowledge of WordPress and content management systems is a plus.
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization.
  • Capacity to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team required.

Certifications/Licenses
Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) is a plus

Work Environment
This position generally is performed in an office environment and may be suitable for partial telework.
Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, as well as attendance at external events.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting/mobility—to work at a desk and move around work areas.
  • Speaking/hearing—to engage orally in conversation with others and conduct presentations.
  • Seeing—to effectively use a computer screen and for reading and interpreting printed materials, memos and other paperwork.
  • Reaching/handling—to input information into computer systems and retrieve and work with appropriate paperwork, equipment and supplies.

This is a union position to be represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 2.

Candidates must be legally eligible and authorized to work in the U.S. NDI does not provide sponsorship. 

As a result of COVID19, this position will start in a remote capacity. However, when the office re-opens, this position will be based in our Washington, DC office. NDI does not cover relocation costs for this position.
