Hours: 3.5 days per week (24.5 hours)

Salary: Grade C, starting at £25,164 for London for 3.5 days per week (adjusted for local living standards – if appropriate)

Location: Working from home with good internet access and good travel connections. Post holder must be able to travel to Iraq and the UK. Unfortunately, a work permit for the UK is not available for this post.

Purpose of the job

CREID is a large programme delivered in a Consortium – the Consortium for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID) which will investigate, report on and act on ways in which religious discrimination is a factor that impacts on development and the achievement of economic, social and participation rights. The purpose of this role is to help Minority Rights Group (MRG) coordinate the Iraq aspects of the CREID programme in cooperation with in-country partners. The post holder will support partners in their implementation of hate speech monitoring, increased understanding of hate speech initiation, spread and impact, positive messaging support work, training of media personnel. The post holder will liaise between partners and international mechanisms such as the UN Human Rights mechanisms, the EU and Foreign Ministries.

The post holder will also contribute to MRG’s core principles and strategy and may also help develop new programmes in the Middle East region.

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone with the following skills:

  • Good knowledge of freedom of religion and belief within the field of human rights, with particular emphasis on Iraq
  • Good working knowledge of international human rights and minority rights
  • Knowledge of the current social, political and security context in Iraq, including the situation and needs of minority communities in the area and religious minorities in particular
  • Knowledge and experience of using digital tools for human rights monitoring and advocacy
  • Knowledge and experience on hate speech and/or dangerous speech
  • Good working knowledge of both English and Arabic (Kurdish speaking applicants will also be considered)
  • Excellent organisational abilities
  • Good writing and numeracy skills
  • Proven ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Computer literate and knowledge of Word for Windows, spreadsheets, databases, the Internet and email packages

And with at least one years’ experience of:

  • working thematically on freedom of religion or belief
  • working on human rights (preferably minority rights) on or in the Middle East
  • work involving online or offline hate speech
  • successfully managing international projects including drawing up and managing budgets, monitoring, scheduling, and evaluation
  • coordinating and cooperating with local partners
  • work involving complex security settings
