As part of a series of a series of 11 new appointments planned over the next three years appointments that will grow our portfolio for biological sciences research, enhance our research-led education and extend our reach on the international stage we are seeking to make a Faculty appointment in the area of plant organism interactions. You will have an exciting opportunity to influence the life sciences agenda at the University of Southampton which climbed to 77th in the QS World Rankings in 2021. Our School takes pride in research that spans microbiology, virology, immunology, glycobiology, structural biology, neuroscience, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, plants and food security with a growing portfolio in systems biology and complex data analytics. We host the prestigious National Biofilms Innovation Centre, state-of-the-art facilities, the BBSRC SoCoBio Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) and are integral to the Institute for Life Sciences which fosters interdisciplinary research. We deliver fantastic education and consistently lead the Russell Group Universities for student satisfaction (1st 2019, 2nd 2020, 2nd 2021). We have close alliances with the Schools of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and with the Faculty of Medicine including the newly established Centre for Cancer Immunology.
The interaction of plants with other organisms has a major impact in areas such as food security where pests and pollinators are both critical determinants of crop productivity. You will have a growing international profile on a topic that speaks to this challenge to food security. The School is exceptionally well-equipped for this work with dedicated plant growth rooms and a licenced Invertebrate Facility with environmentally controlled rooms. You will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term programme that complements existing strengths in this area within the School of Biological Sciences.
You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in the life sciences.
Strong applicants should demonstrate:
• A doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
• Ability to obtain peer-reviewed funding, particularly within the remit of the BBSRC
• Evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
• Ability for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
