A day in the life of a Livelihoods and Food Program Manager, Iraq and Syria

Job Duties

  • Provide overall strategy and vision for the project while meeting project goals and objectives.
  • Closely monitor project implementation activities and ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with the agreed work-plans, proposals, guidelines and SOPs.
  • Lead and successfully manage the implementation of livelihoods activities, including provision of small business grants and job creation and training.
  • Ensure proper management, tracking, distribution, and reporting of all food commodities.
  • Represent Samaritan’s Purse and the food assistance and livelihoods programs in partner and relevant cluster meetings.
  • Aid in the development of plans and proposals for new food assistance and livelihoods programs.
  • Work closely with the Program Development Officer (PDO) to develop appropriate monitoring and evaluation plans to ensure strategic objectives are met.
  • Supervise or delegate the supervision of contractors and employees/temporary laborers to ensure equity and quality standards are met.
  • Manage a diverse staff including delegating tasks, building their capacity, appraising and addressing performance, and handling staff conflict.
  • Assess training needs to further develop the skills of project staff.
  • Coordinate with logistics for procurement, warehousing, and delivery.
  • Steward the budget faithfully in accordance with SP and external donor finance protocol, working with leadership on forecasting expenditure surpluses and deficits.
  • Maintain good working relationships with government officials, donor coordinating personnel, and food security and livelihood cluster members.
  • Follow policies and procedures of Samaritan’s Purse as set forth in the Policy Manual.
  • Attend daily morning devotions and participates in prayer support for the ministry, donors and volunteers.
  • Maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, and the general public.

In the role of Livelihoods and Food Program Manager, you are responsible for management of livelihoods and food programs with Samaritan’s Purse in Iraq and Syria. You will provide overall leadership, management, technical guidance, and direction to ensure successful implementation of the program and achievement of program objectives. The Program Manager is accountable for both the quality of the program and for the effective financial and operational management.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A personal, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and desire to continue being an active, consistent witness for Him.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university in Agriculture, Development, Business, Economics, or related field of study.
  • 2-4+ years of technical working experience in development projects management in livelihoods/food or cash projects (required).
  • Strong knowledge of livelihoods, food processing, or cash distributions.
  • Experience in project management in various sectors including proposal writing, program development, implementation, and monitoring/evaluating methodologies.
  • Experience managing a team of staff. Proven management and leadership experience.
  • Strong project management, financial management, organizational, and relational skills. A strong team player and adept at creating a strong team spirit.
  • Experience working and living overseas (preferred), with ability to be flexible and adaptable. Experience living and working in Middle Eastern cultures (a plus).
  • Ability to communicate and interact well with people of different educational, linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel and work in difficult conditions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Language: Fluency in English (required). Strong English language writing and oral communication skills, and demonstrated ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Language: Arabic skills (preferred).

Language Requirement: Fluency in English (required) / Arabic (preferred)

Travel Expectations: Ability to travel to field sites to monitor projects.
