1. The Assignment Objective

MESPT is seeking services of a Communication Specialist with prior experience in communication for development to systematically collect information of selected projects, analyze the impact and compile outstanding case studies that can be used to pitch the organization to donors and investors as well as be used to direct future programming’s of the organization.

The Specialist will be guided by the programme outcomes namely: –

  1. Creation of green jobs with a bias to youth and women

  2. Sale turnover from the 5 targeted value chains (nuts, export vegetables, dairy, passion fruit, mango and avocado)

  3. Improvement of resource efficiency and access to, and uptake of clean technology and climate sensitive solutions by Small holder farmers.

Additionally, consideration of the programme outputs listed below will be paramount: –

  1. Farmers linked to markets.
  2. Small holder farmers access to financial services for value chain and business development,
  3. Small holder farmers certified on globally and locally recognized standards and certifications,
  4. Small holder farmers reached through awareness initiatives on resource efficient, clean and climate sensitive technologies.
  5. Small holder farmers accessing financial services for the resource efficient, clean and climate sensitive technologies
  6. Small holder farmers enrolled as local service and input providers for the technologies.

2. Role of the Communication for Development Specialist

The specialist Communication Technical Assistant will work closely with the Corporate Communications Unit, Learning, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit and GGEP Manager in partnership with respective Value Chain Officers to get the required information for the compilation of the case studies.

The successful communication specialist is expected to perform the following: –

  • Review the programme reports (field based and donor reports) and identify activities/projects to write case studies on
  • Conduct extensive field research, including researching and collecting print and media materials, absorbing, and synthesizing information, and conducting field interviews via phone and in person; and write case studies in collaboration with programme staff on identified activities/projects
  • Edit the exiting case studies, review, and update them to completeness

3. Expected Output

They include the following: –

  • 18 case studies, 3 per target region with high quality photographs (The target regions include, Lower Eastern region, Mt. Kenya and Upper Eastern regions, Nyanza/Western regions, Coastal region, and rift valley regions)

4. Required Experiences, Competencies and Skills

The communication specialist should have the following competencies, qualifications, and experience: –

Competencies, Knowledge, Abilities / Skills Set

  • In-depth knowledge of how development programmes work – results-based management and results-oriented approach to project implementation
  • Ability to draft concise and informative documentation in English
  • Ability to think out-of-the-box
  • Ability to present complex issues in simple and clear manner
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver high quality results on time
  • Initiative and independence
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with demonstrated evidence of capacity to produce and present good reports
  • Analytic capacity and demonstrated ability to process, analyses and synthesize complex, technical information
  • Ability to innovate, combining methodological approaches and data from various levels and disciplines
  • Strong inter-personal skills, excellent communication, and networking skills.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in PR, Mass Communications, Journalism, Corporate Communications, or related field
  • At least 3 years working as a communication specialist in a related field
  • Knowledge and application of ICT, graphic design, and infographics

5. Assignment Implementation Arrangement

The Communication Technical Assistant/ specialist will be supervised by the Corporate Communications Officer but will report to the Programme Manager. He/she will be facilitated through the GGEP Programme department for his/her day-to-day and field requirements such as transport and other related logistic needs for official business purposes only outside Nairobi in need be.

6. Duration of the Assignment

The assignment will be for a period of 40 working days from the date of signing the contract.

7. Equipment for the Assignment

MESPT shall only provide a camera if need be to complete this assignment. Laptop, tape recorders and other equipment needed for the assignment shall be provided by the TA/ specialist.

8. Intellectual Property

All information pertaining to this project (documentary, audio, digital, reports, project documents, etc.) belonging to MESPT, which the TA/ specialist may come into contact with in the performance of his/her, duties under this assignment shall remain the property of MESPT; who shall have exclusive rights over their use. Except for purposes of this assignment, the information shall not be disclosed to the public nor used in whatever form without written permission of MESPT.

Submission, Receipt and opening of proposals

The Financial Proposal and the Technical Proposal files MUST BE COMPLETELY SEPARATE and emailed separately through [email protected] and clearly named as either “TECHNICAL PROPOSAL” or “FINANCIAL PROPOSAL”. The subject of the email should clearly capture the tender number & description by 30th September 2020 at 5 pm
