UNICEF’s Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP), coordinates and supports private sector activity in over fifty countries. The Private Sector Fundraising and Partnerships (PSFP) Team plays a leadership role in the organization creating vision, setting goals and working across the UNICEF family of fundraisers to achieve them. The fundraising programme raises over US$1.5 billion a year, and there are ambitious plans for growth. A critical driver of efficient income growth is the systematic gathering and sharing of fundraising knowledge and best practice throughout the UNICEF network.

UNICEF’s private sector fundraising is complex and diverse and is coordinated through the Market Development Team within PSFP. Working closely with the Chief (Market Development), the Senior Adviser (Investment Funds and Global Best Practice), PFP specialists, and fundraisers in a range of markets the incumbent leads the capture and coordination of fundraising knowledge and insight. This incumbent is expected to support accelerated revenue growth and innovation in fundraising by disseminating the very best fundraising techniques and ideas across a diverse network of markets. The incumbent will establish and then manage a system to make fundraising knowledge sharing simple and efficient and support senior staff with advocating for the adoption of best practice fundraising throughout the network.

The Temporary Appointment was established to provide business continuity for the section while the incumbent is on maternity leave. 

Purpose of the Job:

The post itself is quite new. It focuses on raising more money for children through the widespread adoption of fundraising good practice amongst the UNICEF private sector fundraising community.   

This post plays an important role in accelerating growth in private sector revenue. It supports the delivery of ‘How’ strategies 2, 3 and 4 of the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2018-2021.  Much of the work is at a pilot stage providing opportunities to generate and implement new ideas in line with the workplan.

How can you make a difference?

Main Tasks:

The post holder works closely with fundraisers and knowledge management experts in PFP, Regional Support Centers, National Committees and country offices with the aim of raising more money by identifying and sharing good practices.  This role focuses on creating the tools, processes and culture that make it possible to find and share knowledge across a diverse fundraising network in over 50 countries.

The post holder will support the implementation of a fundraising knowledge management strategic framework, the creation and roll-out of a coordinated, consistent and systematic approach to identifying, capturing, qualifying and globally promoting fundraising knowledge and best practices, as well as the development and implementation of a range of fundraising knowledge/best practice tools.

Deliverables:

  1. Expand the means by which all markets can share fundraising successes, through a self-service approach called the ‘embracing approach’. The work will focus on evaluating and expanding further the scope, tools, processes and communications currently put in place by the current post holder. To be successful this project must deliver a growing range of high-quality examples of good-practice spanning fundraising channels and markets.
  2. Evaluate and expand an evidence-based approach to adopting good-practices at a market level known as the ‘systematic approach’.  This compliments the embracing approach and has a higher level of evaluation and targeting.  It will require similar expansion and development over the course of the assignment.  The aim of this project is to directly link markets with knowledge to those who need it in order to address specific opportunities or problems. Working closely with PFP colleagues and fundraisers in markets to evaluate and respond to successes and failures will be crucial.  The key deliverable is grow the number of markets and PFP specialists using the model.
  3. Evaluate the success and failures of both the embracing and systematic approaches.   Make recommendations for improvement and implement those agreed with the Senior Adviser, Investment Funds and Global Best Practice.  The key deliverable enhancing systems, processes and buy-in so that significantly more good practice is shared and implemented.
  4. Set goals for and lead the working groups established to deliver both approaches, ensuring that groups provide advice, undertake work and communicate with their teams and stakeholder groups as required.
  5. Assist the Senior Adviser Investment Funds and Global Best Practice, Chief Market Development and other staff in communicating to stakeholders in PFP, markets and Regional Support Centers.
  6. Undertake other duties relevant to the role, including participation in team events, budgeting, reporting on workplan progress, procurement of services or goods, and other tasks as they arise.

Estimated Duration of the contract:

  • 6 Months (Starting 14th December )

REPORTING TO:

  • The incumbent will report to the Senior Adviser (Investment Funds and Global Best Practice) who will provide overall direction and guidance.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • Advanced University degree in Business Administration, Economics, Marketing, Fundraising or other related fields is required.
  • Alternatively, a first level university degree in a relevant field combined with 7 years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Experience in knowledge management and best practice exchange is essential, ideally that will have been acquired in a fundraising or marketing environment.  Experience within an international environment, environment is an advantage, as is knowledge of the technologies used to capture and share information and the human opportunities and barriers associated with knowledge management.
  • Knowledge of private sector fundraising techniques is an advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered as an asset.
