The British Embassy in Sofia is part of the United Kingdom’s diplomatic service, a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests in Bulgaria and is now looking for an Assistant to Defence Attaché.

Main purpose of job:

Assist the Defence Attaché in maintaining a point of contact between the UK Ministry of Defence and Bulgarian Ministry of Defence, supporting UK forces in country and managing our network of contact.

Roles and responsibilities :

  • Providing assistance to the Defence Attaché and acting as a point of contact for UK Ministry of Defence (UK MoD) and Bulgarian Ministry of Defence.
  • Building contacts with the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other specialised agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations, Defence Industry companies and other fellow Embassies.
  • Administration and implementation of Defence Engagement Activity Programme between Bulgaria and UK.
  • Managing Diplomatic clearances for UK aircraft, ships, vehicles visiting Bulgaria.
  • Planning, organizing and leading on all UK Defence-related events and visits to Bulgaria (go on recces and exercise grounds when there are units from the UK exercising in Bulgaria). Travel in country and occasionally abroad, sometimes over night or more.
  • Accompanying Defence Attaché on official visits, meetings and representational activities. Translation/interpreting to/from Bulgarian/English for Defence Section as and when required.
  • Providing input to the UK Vice Chief of Defence Staff monthly report and producing briefings/reports for the HMA and UK MoD; drafting letters/ speeches on behalf of the HMA and DA; preparing press releases and posts for the British Embassy website and social media in cooperation with the Embassy Media Officer.
  • Office administration including correspondence, filing, organising meetings, diary-management and cash account activity.
  • Providing Defence Section assistance to UKTI team in British Embassy Sofia. Develop expertise on Cyber Security.

  • Fluency in English and Bulgarian (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*).
  • Previous experience in office administration and event planning and management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for influencing at all levels.
  • Self-motivated, independent and effective team-player.
  • Discretion.
  • Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Bachelor degree.
  • Previous experience of working in defence/security field, and international organisations.
  • Some knowledge of defence issues, both globally and Bulgarian.
  • Clean driving license.

This is a full-time, temporary position (36 hours per week) of 12 months to cover a maternity leave.

The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of BGN 2,463.97 gross.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU/EEA citizens and the family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions Service according to Bulgarian employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Bulgaria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
