Climate Diplomacy

Main purpose of the job:

To coordinate the work of British High Commission, Victoria (BHCV) to combat Climate Change.  This will include diplomatic action to support delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in November 2021.  The post holder will also lead on the High Commission’s carbon offsetting of long haul travel initiative, launched as part of the Nature Based Solutions workstream of COP26.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Serving as the policy lead for BHCV COP26 engagement for Seychelles.
  • Explaining complex scientific theory in an clear, accessible and convincing manner to drive forward ambitious policy and project work.
  • Liaising with officials in the Government of Seychelles on policy and operational elements of delivering COP26, including encouraging ambitious targets for Seychelles’ Nationally Determined Contributions.
  • Serving as Project Manager for a new BHCV tree planting initiative that will allow tourists to offset the carbon of their long haul flights.  This will include presenting a solid evidence base for this work, arranging and managing a series of planting events, assisting the BHCV Comms Manager in a marketing strategy, and evolving this initiative to reflect feedback and lessons learned.
  • Encouraging the expansion of the BHCV initiative within a wider green recovery of tourism and a national movement towards developing and promoting Seychelles as an environmentally-friendly tourist destination.  Particular focus on encouraging engagement and alignment from owners and General Managers of large tourism establishments.
  • Line managing a local PT project officer from a partner environmental NGO, primarily focussed on the BHCV nature based solutions initiative.

In addition to programme and project management, you will contribute to wider policy, corporate, admin work and public engagement in BHCV.  This will include exciting opportunities for learning, development and international travel.

Resources Managed (Staff and Expenditure)

  • One PT project officer from a partner environmental NGO.
  • Project and engagement budget est. £40k

  • Applicants should be educated to undergraduate degree level and be able to explain scientific theory to audiences unfamiliar with the subject mater.
  • Qualifications in scientific subjects (A Level and Undergraduate Degree equivalent)
