Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

The jobholder will join a team of two other drivers who carry out daily driving duties and support the efficient functioning of the Embassy. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a safe, effective service to Embassy staff and official visitors when required. This includes providing professional and safe driver services, efficient messenger and administrative support, and any other work required by the Embassy.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Driving Embassy staff to meetings, appointments and functions outside the Embassy,  checking the location of meetings and acquiring an excellent knowledge of Niamey and surrounding area.
  • Providing transport and logistical support for Embassy visitors.
  • Responsibility for all vehicle care; undertaking daily vehicle cheeking of tyres, hydraulic (brake) fluid, engine oil, radiator and battery levels and verifying the rear and front lights including indicator and brake lights are in good working order.
  • Ensuring the Embassy vehicles are always clean, refuelled, and in good running condition and that regular maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Overseeing routine and urgent maintenance of vehicles. Working with local garages to ensure proactive maintenance is completed in a timely and proper manner in order to ensure minimum down time of the vehicle.
  • Maintaining a daily log of all journeys and ensuring that passengers complete the Vehicle Journey Log.
  • Reporting any vehicle accidents and/or malfunctions to the Transport Manager.
  •  Distributing letters/invitations and carrying out all other errands or work as required by the Embassy.

  • A clean current ‘category C’ driving licence (which permits the holder to drive heavy vehicles)
  • Excellent driving skills with attention to safety
  • At least three years recent experience of driving in Niger
  • A good working knowledge of Niamey and its principal locations
  • Able to read and write basic French
  • Fluent in spoken French, Zarma and/or Haoussa
  • Good knowledge of basic car maintenance and mechanical principles
  • High level of personal integrity, honesty and discretion
  • High standard of personal presentation
  • Proven ability to concentrate and drive safely in heavy and hazardous driving conditions.
  • Knowledge of local driving laws and traffic patterns
  • Readiness to work in a team
