Main purpose of job:

To support the Estates Works Supervisor in the day to day running of the British High Commission Estate ensuring the delivery of a quality service in line with FCDO Estates Operations, and Health and Safety requirements.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

General Maintenance:

  • To carry out work as documented on accommodation maintenance schedules, weekly, monthly or as frequently as required.
  • To include but not limited to tasks such as cleaning of gutters, painting of walls &/or other as required, various plumbing tasks, diesel in drains, installation of H&S supplies, checking of water tanks & changing bulbs etc.
  • To monitor contractors working throughout the BHC estate.

Office Maintenance:

  • To ensure all public areas are kept in good condition (especially the public entrance around the consular area).
  • To work with the Maintenance Works Supervisor to ensure external walls, curbs, carports and back of house areas are clean & painted.
  • To assist with internal maintenance as required.

Official Residence:

  • To assist the Maintenance Works Supervisor in all tasks at the residence to ensure preventative maintenance is ongoing, ensuring the Official Residence is well maintained at all times.

Maintenance Works Requests:

  • To assist the Maintenance Works Supervisor in tasks documented on the MWF by reporting officer, to ensure resolution of issues is within the required deadline ensuring officers accommodation issues are dealt with promptly.

Projects:

  • To accompany and monitor contractors on site visits to properties, to ascertain scope of works for small projects.

Transport:

  • To assist the Maintenance Works Supervisor in lifting and transporting small pieces of furniture and other items as and when required.
  • To collect parts and equipment as and when required.
  • To assist the Maintenance Works Supervisor in transporting archived materials to the dump or to the port incinerator if required.

Communication:

  • To liaise with the Estates Manager and Maintenance Works Supervisor daily regarding required tasks.
  • Liaison with suppliers and officers as required.

Other tasks:

  • Bi-monthly visits to the residence (or other) in conjunction with Estates Manager & Maintenance Works Supervisor.
  • Assistance with storage of furniture and preparation of furniture sales.
  • Liaison with suppliers and contractors and accompanying on visits as necessary (i.e. AC, lift maintenance, Technicals Works Officer, visiting consultants & UKB staff etc.).

  • Experience of basic plumbing and carpentry (minimum of 2 years)
  • Knowledge of electrical installations
  • Basic IT skills including Microsoft Word
  • Full clean Heavy Goods Vehicle driving licence
  • Language: an excellent command of the English language is required

Working patterns:

Hours for this role will vary. Core office hours are 7:45 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday -Thursday and 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Fridays. Flexible working hours are essential, with some evening and weekend work required.
