The British Embassy in Budapest is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Hungary and is now looking for a paid Intern to work with the Embassy’s Communications and Events team to help to deliver specific additional work over the coming months. The successful candidate should be a university student or recent graduate who has limited work experience, and an interest in building up career experience in a field related to the Embassy’s activities.

This role is to provide communications and administrative support to the Embassy’s Communications and Events Team, and the successful candidate should expect the role to consist largely of this type of work. In particular, the role will focus on supporting projects related to the Embassy’s Climate Change and COP 26 agenda.

This internship is also a good opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast paced international policy environment in preparation for a career in this field.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to carry out Learning and Development activities in line with their areas of interest, supported by their Mentor.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing administrative and logistical support on Embassy projects, including translation, social media and communications support, communicating with contacts, stakeholders and customers; providing other logistical support to the Team, including on administrative tasks;
  • Establishing and maintaining good relationships within the Embassy, and with external stakeholders, customers and suppliers;
  • Writing meeting records and other summaries;
  • Providing support to Embassy officials on work strands related to the Embassy’s Climate Change and COP26 agenda. Help the Embassy’s Policy Team with stakeholder mapping;
  • Carrying out Learning & Development activities around the successful candidate’s area of policy interest, agreed with the Intern’s Mentor at the beginning of the internship.

  • Good command of written and spoken English* and Hungarian;
  • Current University student or recent (within two years) graduate;
  • Interest in a career in international relations or policy;
  • Ability to learn quickly;
  • Team player but also ability to work independently with minimum supervision;
  • Enthusiasm and flexibility;
  • Solid command of Microsoft Office.

  • Previous experience of working in teams to deliver projects;
  • Exposure to and/or participation in formal events, receptions or presentations.

This is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week) for 3 months.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Hungarian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Hungary and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
