Main purpose of job:

The Defence Projects Officer provides support to the Assistant Defence Adviser and Defence Team with main responsibility for offering UK training to the Malaysian Military Services.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Responsible for offering UK training to the Malaysian Military Services including bidding for UK courses preparation of offer letters and monitoring deadlines, candidate details and the visa process.
  • Lead on projects such as seminars and courses run in Malaysia including but not exclusively Strategic Leadership Programme, Exclusive Economic Zone Seminar
  • Provide support to the Assistant Defence Adviser and the Defence Team for military visits including VIP’s, military training expeditions and sports visits
  • Support EA/ADA to obtain military aircraft/ships/units Diplomatic Clearances from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and Foreign Commonwealth Office.
  • Work with and support the British High Commission with cross department initiatives for example QBP, VIP visits, Remembrance events.

Essential on arrival:      

  • Ability to work unsupervised using own initiative.    
  • Good IT skills and proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Able to work across cultures and organisations with sensitivity and effectiveness;
  • Excellent written and spoken English with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels.
  • Taking responsibility to deliver challenging goals and targets;
  • Ability to plan ahead, reassessing priorities as situations change.

The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package, benefits, leave entitlement of 20 days per annum (calculated on pro rata basis) and works hard to provide L&D opportunities to staff.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.   

This position is being advertised as a 24 months fixed-term position in Kuala Lumpur and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is committed to developing its staff, working hard to provide a comprehensive L&D offer. All new staff undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses covering areas such as diversity, health and safety, and information management.

A mix of formal and informal learning and development will be provided; including induction to MOD, the FCDO/British High Commission, Developing Sector Knowledge.

Working patterns:

20 hours per week.  Flexible and remote working options available following line manager approval. Individual must remain flexible during high tempo periods.
