The British Embassy Manila is a large diplomatic mission (around 250 staff) delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives on prosperity, security and consular matters. Main purpose of job:

The Support Officer will serve as a key member of the British Embassy’s Policy, Projects and Communications team. S/he will provide support to the Political Counsellor and other colleagues in pursuit of the Embassy’s political, rule of law, and human rights objectives. This will include support to the delivery of Embassy programme and capacity building work, and facilitation of activities and engagements with a wide range of external partners.  

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The jobholder will have a frontline role in supporting the Embassy’s political and human rights objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong management skills, a proven delivery record, interest in political and human rights work, and the skills to deliver in a fast-paced and complex environment.

The jobholder will be responsible for:

  • Administrative and logistical support to political, human rights and rule of law activities and engagement including supporting programme and capacity building work, management of travel, IT, and logistics, facilitation of project visits, and liaison with implementers and government agencies.
  • Financial management of team and programme spend, including monitoring and reporting.
  • Arranging the Political Counsellor’s courtesy calls and other political engagements including sorting travel arrangements for local / regional political visits.
  • Building and maintaining a deep and broad network of contacts with outside implementers including maintaining an updated database of political and human rights contacts
  • Attending and taking notes of meetings and other engagements on behalf of the Political Team; Occasionally preparing political / human rights reports and briefers as part of wider team priorities
  • Assisting the Embassy’s digital media team in content monitoring
  • Working with the Embassy’s bilateral team on Palau political monitoring, networking, and reporting
  • Monitoring and filing relevant files, briefers, notes, and correspondences of the political team
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned and in support of team priorities

The jobholder will have strong communication skills. S/he will have an eye both for detail, and will feel comfortable delivering effectively and efficiently at pace across a broad portfolio. S/he will feel comfortable working in multi-disciplinary teams, and – with creativity and innovation – as a self-starter.

  • Proven organisation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional/academic background in political, development, and/or human rights work
  • With general administration and office support work experience
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Tagalog

  • Experience of project and/or budget management
  • Excellent IT skills
