Main purpose of job: 
Contribute to expanding Post’s knowledge on Guyanese and Surinamese politics;  provide good quality, ballanced, accurate, relevant and timely policy/political analysis and advice to the High Commission and London.  To do this, the post holder will need to develop a broad network of contacts from government to civil society and importantly, proactively engage with media to develop good working relations.  Develop, maintain and implement a Communication Strategy which envelops all forms of media, including expanding work on social network platforms.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
     
•Analyse and record political trends in Guyana and Suriname
•Produce reports on current and historical issues impacting Guyana and Suriname
•Develop a broad network of political and civil society contacts
•Facilitate Post input in the media. 
•Proactively engage with media personalities to develop good working relations
•Prepare press releases and organise press conferences and other media engagements for the British High Commissioner 
•Develop, manage, implement and update the communication strategy for Guyana and Suriname 
•Manage the digital diplomacy work for the British High Commission.
•Actively monitor media outlets, including social media, for relevant stories relating to UK interests
•Manage the Gov.UK website for the British High Commission 
•Project management on small programmes.  This will include:
      -Acting as a Board member for programmes
      -Project management on small projects
      -Managing bids and programme funds
      -Promote programmes in the media as appropriate
•Provide support to the Chevening Scholarship process in Guyana and Suriname 
•Active role as a member of the shortlisting and interviewing board 
•Update the communication and marketing strategy for the scholarship programme in Guyana and Suriname
•Cover with flexibility other arising matters across the High Commission
•Assist, where required, in organising events for the High Commission
•Provide back-up for the High Commissioner’s Personal Assistant

Essential on arrival:

Political acumen, understanding of the media, effective communication skills, digital diplomacy, good networking skills

Must have the legal right to work in Guyana.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

BHC Georgetown has an active L&D Committee which scrutinises and oversees bids for training from staff members. We are committed to ensuring all staff has relevant and developmental training opportunities.  Incumbent will be required to undertake mandatory training following recruitment.

BHC Georgetown already has several members of staff who work flexible hours. Such working may be available for this position.  There will sometimes be a need to work evenings when events are held.

The job will require at least one visit a year to Suriname, to develop contacts and assess the political situation there.

The British High Commission is a friendly mission, with hardworking, professional staff.  It prides itself on being an equal opportunities employer.  

There are many opportunities for learning and development and as Covid-19 restrictions are eased, there should be the chance of some regional travel as part of the role.
