Main purpose of job:

The main purpose of this exciting role is to lead the Embassy’s work on the Chevening scholarship scheme, the UK’s flagship international scholarship. This role requires the jobholder to build a wide ranging network across Korean government, academia and alumni networks, to promote the Chevening scheme and then run the process to find the best quality candidates. The British Embassy in Seoul runs a large Chevening programme, which includes specific agreements with Korean government departments who send their most talented staff on the Chevening programme.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to become the Embassy’s lead on education policy, which will include writing reports about developments in the Korean education sector.  

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work across the wide range of the Embassy’s economic priorities, including on education and alumni engagement, delivery of activity on climate change, as well as wider projects on UK-Korea economic collaboration as they arise.

The ideal candidate therefore would be flexible and able to balance a number of competing priorities, someone with experience of outreach work, and with experience of the UK and/or Korean education sectors. Roles and responsibilities: 

Chevening Scholarship schemes (Bilateral & Core schemes) – 50% 

  • Lead on Chevening Scholarship schemes by completing all interviews by Chevening deadline.
  • Manage and improve the bilateral relationship with four government partners through regular discussions.
  • Administer both Bilateral and Core scheme scholarships including by frequently communicating with the Chevening Secretariat and Scholarship Unit in London.
  • Use alumni funds to organise events related to promotion of Chevening scholarship and alumni engagement.
  • Develop and manage networks to help deliver Chevening alumni engagement objectives – with Chevening Alumni Korea, UK’s higher education bodies and etc.
  • Update and maintain the Chevening and alumni databases.

Chevening Sponsorship – 20%

  • Increase the number of core and bilateral scholars through securing more funding from sponsors.
  • Look to increase the number of bilateral and core sponsors by working up sponsor proposals and reaching out to potential new sponsors.

Education policy – 20% 

  • Work to understand latest educaiton policy developments in Korea and report on these as necessary to colleagues in the UK.
  • Liaise with the Korean Ministry of Education and other government bodies to promote the UK education sector and UK-Korea collaboration.

Corporate objective – 10%

  • Join corporate committees within the embassy and actively engage in the agenda and activities.

  • Languages: fluent written and spoken English and Korean

The position being advertised is to provide temporary cover for a fixed-term of one (1) year. 

The British Embassy in Seoul takes learning and development seriously. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop many core and transferable skills through both formal and informal learning and development opportunities. Members of staff are encouraged to make use of the learning and development opportunities that the office has to offer.

Standard working hours are from 0900-1715 Monday to Thursday and 0900-1700 Friday. Suitable for flexible working and working from home. 

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Seoul are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Korean employment law. 

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
