The British Embassy, Israel has a vacancy for the position of Temporary Trade Policy Advisor (Maternity Leave Cover), Grade – B3 (L).

Overview of the role:

The British Embassy in Tel Aviv is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and we are seeking to recruit a Trade Policy Advisor to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) Israel team at the Embassy, to provide cover for maternity leave. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director, DIT Israel.

The successful candidate will work with DIT and the market access leads on ongoing strategic market access and trade policy issues; and for future potential negotiations/transitional arrangements where required. This includes identifying the trade policy aspects of wider political issues; having a strategic overview on barriers to UK businesses; developing appropriate policy responses in conjunction with Whitehall colleagues and other partners as required.

This is a Maternity leave cover position, therefore temporary.

Main Responsibilities:

The main responsibilities are as follows:

  • Maintain a detailed assessment of trade policy priorities and trade barriers specific to Israel, and provide advice on how Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) can address those;
  • Develop relationships with a range of stakeholders including Government, industry and business, to build a network for information and influence;
  • Handle enquires and issues that arise on country-specific trade barriers / market access issues as appropriate;
  • Work closely with DIT and Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) colleagues, as well as wider cooperation between different missions and markets across the region to ensure a one Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) approach;
  • Assist key Ministerial (and other) senior visits from the UK;
  • Carry out specific research targets connected to trade policy when they arise and work with the Senior Trade Advisor on trade queries.
  • Work closely with other teams in the Embassy (UK-Israel Tech Hub, Science and Innovation Network, Defence) to ensure a joined up approach to UK prosperity objectives in Israel.
  • Addressing market barriers within key sectors and engaging on specific trade policy issues.

Essential:

  • Fluency in English and Hebrew (excellent reading, writing and speaking).

  • Strong written and oral communication and policy skills;
  • Comfortable working with senior level decision makers;
  • Demonstrable analytical and research skills;
  • Resilience and the ability to work under pressure on a challenging portfolio independently;

Desirable:

  • Some previous or relevant experience of trade policy and market access issues;
  • Working overseas on behalf of HMG;
  • Stakeholder management skills.
  • Relevant policy experience;

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including the non-negotiable salary of NIS 13,000 per month plus transport allowance. The successful candidate will be on a one-month probationary period.  

This is a Full Time, Maternity Cover position for five (5) months, with a possibility of short extension. The desired start date for this position is the beginning of April 2021.

Parking facilities will not be provided or paid for by the Embassy and no accommodation or relocation expenses will be paid in connection with this position.

Working hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00-16:00 and Friday 8:00-13:30 – total of 37.5 weekly hours, with an option of flexi hours subject to work priorities and line manager’s agreement. Occasional evening events may be required. Office is based in Tel Aviv.

Eligibility

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Receive the appropriate level of security clearance;
  • Candidates must be able to work legally in Israel.
