Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) in San Salvador is looking for a Trade Officer to join the team. The candidate will engage in trade promotion and market access activities whilst reporting directly to the Regional Coordinator of Trade & Investment. The main role would be to assist in the overall objective of facilitating trade and business opportunities for British companies in El Salvador. This is an exciting opportunity for professionals starting a career in international trade, business and/or government affairs

This position is temporary with the possibility of renewal.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government organisation that helps UK companies succeed in overseas markets. As part of the team, the jobholder will be responsible for developing a pipeline of opportunities in key sectors, engaging with relevant business contacts and promoting British exports.

This is a great opportunity to engage closely with the private sector, government and other stakeholders to achieve the trade team objectives. Under the supervision of DIT’s Regional Coordinator, you will help deliver the export wins targets by working closely with UK companies, identifying opportunities in the market and providing support in private sector initiatives.

The selected candidate will also support the delivery of trade promotion events and commercial visits in El Salvador. The position implies intense networking. High level of professionalism is essential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

· To assist the Regional Coordinator by maintaining and developing a pipeline of commercial opportunities in key sectors such as healthcare, education, security and infrastructure.

· To promote procurement processes and business opportunities available in El Salvador within the respective industry sector in the UK.

· To conduct market research and reports on different sectors in El Salvador.

· Organise and run trade missions and commercial events in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

· To build and maintain a robust network of commercial stakeholders, both within the Government and El Salvador’s business community.

· To collaborate, when required, with DIT’s Regional Market Access Manager on trade policy matters.

Essential on arrival:

• University educated with at least 12 months of commercial experience.

• Customer service delivery oriented.

• Good administration and organisation skills.

• Innovative, flexible and proven team player.

• IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCO systems.

Must have the legal right to work in El Salvador.

Language requirements:

Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required: Proficient and Fluent

Desirable:

• A good understanding of British and El Salvador business environment.

• Politically aware and familiar with international trade.

• Experience in business development and client relationship/account management.

The Embassy is committed to learning and development and there is a range of training on offer for the successful applicant to support their work in the embassy.  This will include training courses delivered remotely through the Foreign Offices’ Diplomatic Academy, as well as the potential to travel for training courses delivered regionally and/or the UK.      

Office hours in the embassy are 7:30am – 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and from 7am – 11:30pm on Fridays, although there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager; personal circumstances will be taken into account.

This job involves flexible working, sometimes working late nights when there are official events. Some travel abroad will be required.
