The British Embassy Doha is part of a worldwide network that represents political, economic, security and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Service Unit Assistant, grade A2 (L), to start as soon as possible.

Main Purpose of the Job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Trade and Investment arm for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world, support UK business overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have over 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.

DIT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan (MEAP) region is led from Dubai and represents 12 markets with a team of some 120 staff.

The MEAP Trade Service Unit is MEAP’s universal entry point for UK business in the region. We are now looking to recruit a  Trade Asssistant who will manage the newly formed sub-Hub for the DIT Qatar team. The purpose of the job is to help UK SME’s enter the Qatar market and win business.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Deputy Director of DIT Qatar, supporting the running of the MEAP Hub in Dubai by providing timely, accurate and comprehensive Management Reporting Information (MRI) on a monthly basis in order to meet KPI’s.
  • Review and answer enquiries sent to the Qatar sub-hub. Adopting an effective relationships management approach for UK SME’s.
  • Working under the supervision of the Deputy Director DIT you will be responsible for various defined tasks in support of UK companies currently in market or looking to enter the market. This could include organising visit programmes and attending either virtual or face to face briefings, trade missions and or exhibitions in Qatar.
  • Record, allocate, track, trace and report all SME approaches, manage follow-up actions from enquiries and facilitate consultative client discussions with Qatar DIT colleagues and other key stakeholders in MEAP.
  • Prepare documentation and data to support internal DIT MEAP reporting tools including devising metrics and compiling reports
  • Write viable export opportunities following guidance and best practice and upload onto the ‘Exporting is Great’ website
  • Upload relevant interactions onto Data Hub.
  • Provide ad hoc administrative support to the Country Director / Deputy Director DIT as required.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • Undergraduate degree and/or relevant professional or hands on trade related experience.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in a customer facing and/or trade related job.
  • Track record of delivery through collaboration and partnering in complex environments.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable dealing with senior officials and business people.
  • Experience of data analysis and interpretation.
  • Proactive, with a ‘can do’ attitude and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Strong IT skills in Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.

  • Private sector experience.
  • Understanding of the Middle Eastern business market.
  • Understanding of the British business market.
  • Experience of working in virtual teams.

The Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, including non-negotiable salary of QR 11,785 per calendar month and transportation allowance of QR 800 per calendar month, paid in arrears. A leave entitlement of 25 working days rising to 30 working days; and access to trainings. The contract will be for a full time employment, on fixed term basis for 2 years subject to 6 months’ probation period.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Embassy working hours are 7.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday and 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Thursday.  Due to the nature of the work, flexibility on hours is required and some out of office hours required from time to time support of events, conferences and other business engagement. The Embassy encourages flexible working subject to operational needs and line manager’s approval.

The Embassy has an active Continuous Professional Development Committee, and the whole of Post is committed to providing the time and resources for staff to develop professionally. Opportunities to enhance skills during employment may include:

This role provides enormous opportunities to grow and develop given its pan MEAP role. Job holder will have access to the full suite of DIT and FCDO learning and developing opportunities including the FCDO’s Diplomatic Academy, training in the UK and will be encouraged to join DIT’s trade profession.

We also provide regular in-house learning opportunities and are committed to supporting further academic opportunities.

Travel to the UK and within the Gulf region (and possibly further afield) may be required for business, events, training and logistical purposes

The successful candidate will need to commence security clearance procedures through the Embassy and will be required to have or obtain the appropriate security clearance before employment commences and maintain this throughout period of employment.

Eligibility:

Applicants must already reside in Qatar and hold the right to live and work there, including those either under spouse sponsorship or be able to transfer an existing sponsorship to the British Embassy.

Process:

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two months.
