W1 Professorship “Complex thin film systems / advanced epitaxy” (f/m/d)

The Faculty of Physics at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen is announcing a vacancy for a Junior Professor at the Institute of Materials Physics.

W1 – “Complex thin film systems / advanced epitaxy” (f/m/d) temporary civil servant (grade W1 NBesO)

The initial appointment will be limited to three years and can be extended for further three years after positive assessment of research and teaching. The junior professorship is associated with the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1073 “Control of Energy Conversion on Atomic Scales” and is also expected to participate in the establishment of new collaborative research, for example within the framework of the Excellence Initiative.
In the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1073, the control of energy conversion in materials with tunable strong correlations is the focus of the 3rd funding period. The W1 professorship will contribute to the required material design of high-quality thin films of correlated electron systems as well as materials with reduced dimensions (e.g. van der Waals materials and/or oxide thin films). For this purpose, the SFB 1073 offers manifold opportunities for collaboration in the study of correlated dynamics using high-resolution and ultrafast methods.

Your responsibilities:
The professorship is located in the Institute of Materials Physics in cooperation with the I. Institute of Physics. It shall use and further develop the laboratories and advanced methods available in both institutes, e.g. thin film epitaxy by pulsed laser deposition, metal organic aerosol deposition , and thin film analytics, and/or establish alternative film growth processes.

Possible research areas include:
– Epitaxy of strongly correlated oxides and 2D systems.
– Mechanisms of growth in thin film epitaxy.
– Defect engineering of thin films including design of novel interfaces, surfaces and 2D defects.
– Studies of structure-property relationships in terms of energy conversion, phase transitions, and metastable states in correlated systems.
– Fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures

Your profile:
The candidate should conduct excellent research and have a high potential for groundbreaking research in internationally visible projects. The candidate is expected to engage in teaching in the research area of materials and solid state physics. The University of Göttingen emphasizes research-oriented teaching.

The requirements for employment are defined in § 30 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz) in the currently valid version. If employment as a research associate or research assistant took place before or after the doctorate, the doctoral and employment phases together should not have exceeded six years. The professorship is filled on a temporary basis for three years with an option to extend for a further three years. If the personal requirements are met, employment is on a temporary civil service basis. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from scientists from abroad are expressly welcome.

The University of Göttingen aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. It also sees itself as a family-friendly university and promotes the compatibility of science/profession and family. The university has set itself the goal of employing more severely disabled people. Applications from severely disabled persons will be given preference if qualifications are equal. Part-time employment may be granted under certain circumstances.

Online applications including curriculum vitae, list of publications, description of third-party funded projects and teaching and research activities are requested by 25.10.2021 online via the application portal.

Further information can be obtained from Prof. Dr. Christian Jooß, Institute of Materials Physics, e-mail: [email protected] as well as Prof. Dr. Stefan Mathias, I. Institute of Physics, [email protected].
