Digital Content Editor and Creator

Job Summary

In this role, you to support Global Forest Watch (GFW) and the WRI Forests Program by creating the editorial strategy surrounding GFW, building the GFW brand and maintaining quality content. You will craft content related to both GFW products and Forest program expertise. In addition, you will identify and pursue opportunities for creative narrative projects and effectively communicate GFW platform updates, data details and forest monitoring stories through the GFW blog, newsletter outreach, promotion materials, presentations and other external facing content.

Reporting to the Forests Program Communications Manager and WRI’s Editor and Content Strategist, you will work closely with WRI’s Editorial team to create digital content that showcases WRI’s Forests Program expertise, research, and analysis. 

This position is remote due to Covid-19, but you will be based at WRI’s office in Washington, DC once restrictions have lifted.

Job Responsibilities

Main areas of responsibility will include the following:

Digital Writing and Content Creation(45%)

  • Craft digital communications, particularly blog content, that communicates GFW platform updates, data details and forest monitoring stories
  • Identify opportunities for narrative or multimedia projects that highlight GFW’s grantees and projects, illustrate GFW’s theory of change or improve the visibility of GFW’s brand
  • Curate regular newsletter content to communicate updates and impact to GFW users and stakeholders
  • Write copy for GFW marketing materials, such as brochures, postcards, and web pages
  • Identify opportunities to promote WRI researchers’ expertise on forests to external audiences
  • Work closely with the WRI Editorial team in conceptualizing, writing and editing data-driven stories and multimedia content
  • Solicit research findings and new analyses from Forests program staff to turn complex research findings into clever, compelling prose. Help develop key messages from research findings

Editing and Brand Management (45%)

  • Serve as the GFW blog editor and chief, posting and updating content, optimizing for SEO, producing analytics to determine trends in blog readership, identifying actions to expand our audience, managing translations, and directing overall blog strategy
  • Lead the editing and review process for all GFW branded materials including websites content, event outreach, social media campaigns etc.
  • Manage the collaboration between of WRI’s Editorial team and GFW experts to effectively research communicate findings and expertise
  • Support GFW’s “Global Forests Review,” in updating content, making strategic decisions as to where new content fits in the GFW, Global Forest Review and WRI article ecosystem

Other Communications (10%)

  • Work with graphic designers and data visualization specialists to develop key visual content, both static and interactive. Occasionally support video production
  • Support other communications and outreach efforts as needed

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time experience in digital communications
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with an innate attention to detail – integrity quality of products
  • Experience managing a blog, web channel, or other digital content strategies as well as day to day editing and publishing
  • Experience executing digital strategies to reach and influence target audiences in line with programmatic goals and using data and metrics to measure impact and determine improvements
  • Expert knowledge of SEO strategies and analytics tools
  • Familiarity with web development and design (especially managing content in WordPress and Drupal)
  • High degree of comfort exploring and working with data though visual analysis or other means
  • Experience writing/producing graphic and interactive features
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter who is comfortable leading projects from start to finish
  • US work authorization required for this position

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data journalism, online content development or similar experience strongly desired
  • Experience writing on science, environment, or international development issues
  • Advanced language skills in French, Spanish, Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesia a major plus

Potential Salary:
$59,000 – $77,000 if based in United States. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
