Summary of position:
Research Analyst, Trade Policy:

Reporting to Counsellor (Trade Policy) and in collaboration with other officers in the Trade Policy team, the successful candidate will undertake research and analysis on a number of issues regarding developments in the Chinese trade, economic and social policy space of relevance to Canada-China trade and economic relations.

The successful candidate will work with lead officers responsible for the specific issues within the Trade Policy team, and may also collaborate other teams in the Embassy as required. By the end of the employment term, the candidate will have created written reports ranging from baseline research to in-depth analysis.

Trade Commissioner – Oil & Gas and Mining Sectors:

Reporting to Counsellor (Commercial) and in collaboration with other officers in the Trade Industry team, the successful candidate will undertake research and analysis on issues regarding market opportunities and development in China’s oil & gas and mining sectors.

The successful candidate will work with lead officers responsible for the specific sectors within the industrial team, and provide organizational support with the sectoral signature events.

 

Essential qualifications:
Education:
• Minimum Bachelor’s degree from university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience, in a relevant field (e.g. law, commerce, international trade, international politics, public administration)

Language:
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:

Research Analyst, Trade Policy
• Experience in researching and analyzing government policies
• Experience in writing report

Trade Commissioner – Oil & Gas and Mining Sectors
• Experience in Oil & Gas and Mining industries in China
• Experience in organizing trade events

Knowledge:

Research Analyst, Trade Policy
• Understanding of China’s political system and its evolution since 2010
• Understanding of China’s economic, industrial, and S&T/innovation policies
• Understanding of China’s foreign economic relations

Trade Commissioner – Oil & Gas and Mining Sectors
• Knowledge of Chinese business environment and practices
• Knowledge of market opportunities and challenges in China’s Oil & Gas and Mining industries

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to research, interpret sources of information and synthesize data to respond to requests for information with a professional level of business English
• Ability to perform translation and interpretation from Chinese to English and vice versa
• Ability to effectively use the internet, word-processing and spreadsheet applications, including Microsoft Outlook for Windows, Excel and Word

Asset Qualifications:
Experience:
• Experience working in the legal field or in the fields of commerce and/or international trade
• Experience in dealing with Chinese government agencies and/or foreign or Chinese companies

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required;
• The candidate must be able to work 7.5 hours per day. The suggested working schedule is 8:30 am – 5:00 pm

 

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance.

 

Area of selection:
This position is open to external applicants residing in China who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Beijing at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Beijing at their own expense.
