Position description

The Columbia Justice Lab, within the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy, seeks to appoint a Staff Associate I (SA) to work with the Emerging Adult Justice Project (EAJP). The EAJP seeks to inform and drive developmentally appropriate, effective and fair justice responses that advance successful paths to adulthood for emerging adults (ages 18 – 25).

The Staff Associate I will assist the Project with searching for newly published research reports relevant to the field of emerging adult justice to add to our online library (https://www.eajustice.org/emerging-adult-justice-library); working with the Emerging Adult Justice team on expanding the overall content of the website to better reflect our ongoing work and share our findings; selecting content that will be included in our monthly newsletter and writing a draft of the newsletter for review/edits; compiling packets of informational materials that we can share with attendees of our trainings, webinars, groups and conferences (e.g., most relevant research reports, informative info-graphics, etc.); and drafting PowerPoint slides for our presentations (including creating charts to highlight the data and trends).

This position may involve some travel outside of New York City for meetings and convenings. The Staff Associate I will report to Senior Staff Associate III (Lael Chester) and Senior Research Scientist (Vincent Schiraldi).

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social research-related field

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of the justice system and the major issues in the field (e.g., mass incarceration and racial inequities). Candidates with criminal justice histories or lived experience relating to criminal justice are strongly encouraged to apply.

• Ability to work well in a team.

• Strong written and oral communication skills.

• Competency with computer software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

• Can travel, when needed.

• Knowledge of social media

Under the direction of the supervisor (Senior Staff Associate III/Director of the EAJP), the Staff Associate I will conduct research on emerging adult justice issues. Much of the research will come from publicly available data sources (census population, non-identifying arrest data, etc.) but some data will also come directly from the partners that we are working with (e.g., caseload data provided to us from the Director of a correctional agency). The SAI will draft memos and other documents summarizing the research to assist the SSAIII and the team with the ongoing projects (50 %).
