Main purpose of job:

The purpose of this job is to support the High Commission’s prosperity and wider objectives in Australia by developing and delivering external communication activity relating to the UK’s economic interests and trade negotiations with Australia and our wider policy aims.  This job is being offered until 31 March 2022.

Roles and responsibilities:

• Work closely with the Head of Communications, Trade Policy Team and the Department for International Trade (DIT) Communications and Marketing team (based in Sydney) to support design, delivery and evaluation of communications campaigns and activities that support the UK’s Trade Policy objectives, including on the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations with Australia.

• Work closely with the Head of Communications, Climate Change and Clean Growth Team and other Australia Network colleagues to support communications activities related the UK’s Presidency of the COP26 global climate change summit.   Provide communications support for the UK’s wider prosperity objectives as required.

• To make a contribution to our wider communication activities in support of UK priorities in Australia. This will include: providing communications support to the UK’s network of 5 posts across Australia; supporting public engagement events; and working with policy teams and senior High Commission staff to deliver communications outcomes in support of their objectives. Alongside the rest of the communications team you will provide support to the High Commissioner on her public and media engagements.

• Work with a variety of media including print, broadcast, digital and social media. Examples might include: providing media and digital support for a visiting British minister; creating and uploading content to gov.uk and UKinAustralia Twitter and Facebook accounts; organising press events; and potentially briefing media contacts and responding to their questions to maximise acurate coverage reflecting the British government’s viewpoint on issues surrounding Trade Policy and the Free Trade Agreement.

• Contribute to the delivery of the Australia Network’s digital communication ouput, liaising with the Digital Transformation Unit in London and the Regional Digital Unit in Delhi.

• Shared responsibility for assisting with administrative tasks for the Communications Team, and other duties when required.

• Play a role in media handling for consular / crisis issues and other reactive events.

• Good working knowledge of the Australian digital and traditional media environments and at least basic familiarity with the UK system of government and international priorities.

• A record of communicating with impact, using a range of oral and written formats, in a clear and concise style. Understand how to use of different forms of media, including new media, for reaching different audiences.

• Strong evidence of ability to produce high quality digital communications assets quickly.

• Familiarity with the way a media communications plan can play a significant role in delivery of policy or service delivery objectives.

• Ability to build cooperative and productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders regardless of status.

• Good knowledge of Trade Policy issues, including but not limited to knowledge of trade negotiations, the WTO and its functions and wider trade related issues.

Salary is at AU$64,347 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Please note: This role is being advertised as a fixed term contract. There may be the possibility of extending depending on the status of the wider context of the UK priorities in Australia.
