The British Embassy in Oslo is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Norway and is now looking to recruit a Market Adviser for the Department of International Trade (DIT).

Main Purpose of the job:

To help promote British trade/exports across a range of sectors, developing the UK’s long-term trade with Norway and provide UK companies with the support to enter/develop their business in Norway.

This role is to promote UK companies and expertise within long-term, key strategic areas and help deliver activities towards key strategic campaigns. This, within particularly, but not exclusively, Green & Clean industries, Technology, Defence and Security. Working in a team alongside a Senior Market Adviser, the role will allow for the opportunity to work on projects and tasks as part of a team and also independently.

Tasks include supporting British exporters entering the Norwegian market either through bespoke services or by organising activities or events. Research and collection of market and sector information is key to the role, as is developing a network of contacts to help support the main objective. Identifying new opportunities for British exporters will be part of the task. Furthermore the role should look to understand where challenges for those exports could emerge.

The role will also be responsible for responding to and registering enquiries of a more general nature and ensure maintaining a quality, professional service to our customers at all times.

The Trade Adviser is expected to deliver measurable results in the form of verified business won by UK exporters in Norway as a result of assistance provided and to be able to proactively operate in market and identify new opportunities for UK companies in the sectors covered.

The DIT team in Norway collaborates with other DIT teams across Europe on sector-specific initiatives, and with other teams in the British Embassy on areas of mutual interest and key priorities to ensure UK’s prosperity.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Working across the sectors: Defence and security, Green & Clean industries, Technology (AI, 5G).

  • Gain insight into and oversight of specific sectors, where the jobholder is expected to establish and maintain a network of contacts, to identify opportunities for UK companies, work cross embassy to enable networking opportunities, introductions and thus provide UK products and services with a springboard to enter the Norwegian market.

  • Develop knowledge and establish a database of information across identified sectors.

  • Show flexibility to help out other teams on other sectors/events where necessary.

  • Once the Covid 19 situation is controlled, undertake local and European travel to attend events, team meetings etc. Until then creativity to be able to reach to to partners in such a way to stand out from the crowd.

  • Using press, media, network, stay up to date on key developments within the sectors of responsibility to ensure UK exporters are made aware of export opportunities at the earliest possible stage to maximise their chance of success.

  • Support both DIT and cross embassy colleagues on related or unrelated sector/Embassy activities where required.

  • Receive UK and local business contacts providing support and information where required.

  • Support DIT/Embassy social media to promote UK and local news and activities.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Norwegian, including excellent writing skills (C1Level)* as well as strong report writing skills.

  • Knowledge of Defence and security sector.

  • Confidence to proactively build and engage a useful network of contacts.

  • Work experience from a similar field or within international business development.

  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines.

  • Ability to work independantly as well as part of a team.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office.

  • Good telephone manner.

  • Self-starter.

  • Knowledge of Technology/AI/5G sectores.

  • Social media skills.

This is a permanent full-time position, five working days (currently 35 hours net) per week.
