ABOUT THE ROLE

Action Against Hunger Canada supports humanitarian response programming across multiple country offices in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Our programs target populations affected by, or at risk of, malnutrition and its underlying causes through emergency nutrition, WASH, and health approaches. Action Against Hunger is looking for a Gender Advisor to provide gender equality and gender-based violence technical and capacity building support for country teams worldwide. Designing and facilitating trainings will be a key function of this role therefore candidates with significant learning and development experience will be prioritized for the role. The primary responsibilities of this position are:

Specific Accountabilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Humanitarian Affairs of Action Against Hunger Canada and in close collaboration with the Associate Director for Gender/GBV, the International Gender Unit and the Action Against Hunger international network, the Gender Advisor will:

1. Technical support

· Provide GE/GBV technical support and advice to country teams and to support country level action plans for Gender Minimum Standards with specific focus on standards related to Gender Analysis and GBV Risk Mitigation.

· Support country team in the interpretation of gender analysis finding and integration of those finding into programmes.

· Support countries to develop technical Terms of Reference and assist in the process of engaging the services of the International Gender Unit or consultants.

· Provide technical support and guidance to specific offices for concept note and proposal preparation and finalization as required.

· Provide support to countries for the identification of Gender technical personnel during recruitment processes.

· Ensure organizational Gender Policy is applied across all facets of work.

· Provide strategic advice/guidance to country level gender technical staff when/where agreed with country management.

2. CAPACITY BUILDING

· Design and conduct learning analysis and produce annual training calendar based on needs identified.

· Facilitate capacity strengthening events (virtually and face to face) addressing demand at the country level (trainings, technical webinars and/or other specific capacity strengthening/skill development).

· Work with learning and development experts to transition current face-to-face training curricula to virtual trainings.

· Create new curriculum where and when appropriate.

· Coordinate with the International Gender Unit a global capacity building plan to ensure alignment between initiatives and to maximize efficiency and resources amongst the network.

3. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning

· Provide technical advice on monitoring and evaluation plans, based on humanitarian and gender transformative, empowerment and people-centred principles.

· Ensure MEAL tools utilized by the project management team integrate GE/GBV considerations.

· Organize field visits in coordination with country offices for Action Against Huger Canada staff.

· Provide technical input on nutrition meta-analysis exercises.

4. Knowledge and Communications

· Coordinate specific GE/GBV content from country teams and coordinate with communications departments for the production of external communications materials relating to humanitarian programming including for the organization’s website, social media and other media.

· Pro-actively communicate the achievements and successes of Action Against Hunger and its funded programs with donors and other key stakeholders.

5. General

Attend planning sessions, team meetings and annual performance reviews as required.

Pro-active exchange and collaboration with Action Against Hunger Canada team members and the International Network.

Ensure an on-going process of personal professional development and learning.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

· Master Degree in relevant discipline in a field related to social sciences, humanitarian, or gender studies and/or equivalent experience gained.

· Minimum of 5 years working with an international organization in a senior project management position.

· Minimum of 3 years working in a GE/GBV advisory position.

· Demonstrated field/country level experience directly managing humanitarian programmes.

Knowledge, Skills and ABILITIES

· Fluency in English and French or Spanish in both oral and written communications.

· Demonstrated understanding of the creation of an enabling environment for gender equality and PSEA prevention in the workplace and in programming.

· Demonstrated understanding of the complexity of GE/GBV issues across a variety of different cultural, socio economic, and emergency contexts.

· Understanding of the activities of the Protection Cluster, GBV Area of Responsibility and the Call to Action for Prevention of GBV in Emergencies.

· Demonstrate knowledge and analytical understanding in the area of gender and nutrition, WASH and SRHR.

· Solid understanding and commitment to humanitarian principles.

· Demonstrated project cycle management experience.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstration of cultural awareness, diplomacy and tact.

· Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines, and to multi-task.

· Positive attitude and strong analytical, interpersonal and coordination skills.

· Ability to apply Results Based Management.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstration of cultural awareness, diplomacy, and tact.

· Solid understanding and commitment to humanitarian principles including the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS).

· Excellent knowledge of MS Office Applications.

· Demonstrated experience working with Global Affairs Canada funding and agreements.

· Previous experience working within a humanitarian/development gender or nutrition program.

· Previous experience working internationally (field work) for a humanitarian/development organization.
